Checklist Hiking

What do you need to take with you for a a day hiking. This is a personal decision, which partly has to do with the weather forecast and the type of walk. In general, the longer the journey, the more you will carry. Below is a checklist of what you can think of.

Essential

  • Confortable (not new) hiking boots
  • comfortable clothes
  • extra clothes, such as a sweater or vest for during the breaks

Standard

  • backpack (20-30 liters for day trips, weekends 30-40 liters)
  • route directions or topographic map (with rain cover)
  • water bottle(s) and/of thermos
  • rainwear (even in good weather)
  • cash (pin payment is not always available)

 

Depending of the circomstances

  • towel
  • sun cap
  • (sun)glasses
  • sunburn cream
  • insect repellent
  • first aid kit (think of walking injuries and blisters)
  • bread, fruit or snacks (take extra with you)
  • compass
  • car documents or tickets for public transport
  • spare socks
  • Mobile phone (extra battery)
